Right from the first race of the 2017 season, the Politecnico di Torino Racing Team has won again: the new SCDiciassette car came third in Varano de' Melegari, in the first race of the season.
As for 12 years now, the student team that designs and builds racing prototypes competes in the Formula SAE university championship, an international competition among university teams which takes place on race tracks of the calibre of Silverstone, Hockenheim or, in this case,Varano de' Melegari: a veritable world championship for students which aims to simulate the motorsport world, from designing a racing car to racing, not forgetting the business plan.
The team is at its 13th prototype, and the new SCDiciassette car is designed to combine high performance and low consumption. This is achieved through a carbon fibre monocoque, four-wheel electric traction with 4 gear motors integrated in the wheels, electronic control which intelligently distributes the traction on the four wheels and an aerodynamic pack.
SCDiciassette weighs 215 kg, takes only 3 seconds to go from 0 km/h to 100 km/h, has a maximum speed of 130 km/h and a petrol-equivalent fuel consumption of 1 l/40 km.
These are just some of the characteristics that distinguish the prototype designed by the students, with the support of the professors and built thanks to the collaboration with the sponsors which actively contribute to the implementation of the vehicle. These include large corporations such as FCA, Pirelli, Brembo and Baruffaldi as well as small local companies such as 3VU, Officine Meccaniche Massola, but also international companies such as dSPACE and AMK.
“The Racing Team started out as a university team but in reality it is a big family”, explain the Team's students: ”Since 12 years, the old team members train the “new recruits” to pass on to them all the knowledge acquired; this is a unique experience, where one learns how to reconcile university life, with its lessons and exams, with the passion that animates the team's work”. Working together is a unique experience for everyone: “It's an environment in which learning is continuous and you can draw inspiration from your colleagues; an environment in which the combination of multiple application fields can become the key to developing ideas and sharing your values lets you feel part of something big”, conclude the youngsters.
